ARENA declared over a decade ago the target for Clean On-Demand should be a Wholesale Cost (LCOS & LCOE) of 10cents/kWh and a Stretch Target of 5cents/kWh. Since then, average Wholesale Costs have risen to 20cents/kWh. The TORC System is the only Non-Nuke system (and their timelines and obvious barriers are still a major issue), in the World that can show it can viably achieve these goal for the reasons below.
The over-riding “Secrets” to feasibility of all energy generators and their stored fuel in the history of Energy Storage are:
Key to the TORC System’s Feasibility is INTEGRATION of Proven State of the Art Componentry that all share the common characteristics of:
Bulk Commodity Low Cost Materials with Factory (not Site Specific Custom Build) Mass Production Opportunities of Efficiencies for Low and Reducing CAPEX.
TORC is the only Deployable Clean LDES System we are aware of in the World that is entirely made of Bulk Commodity Steel <$1000/t (or at least nothing more costly) with all other deployable clean contenders requiring expensive Critical Materials >$50,000/t and some even Precious Metals (Flow Batteries and Electrolysers)!
Low Stress Operating Conditions of Low Pressure & Temperature Running. This has not been seen and any LDES system to date and results in Ultra Low OPEX (proven on each Component in its own stand alone running conditions) and Long Life (>30years) extendable on an almost unlimited basis via cheap cost of component replacement for Life extension.
Aggregate Energy and Round Trip Efficiencies of Components which already individually leverage efficiencies, produce a sum Round Trip Efficiency result that sustains an overall lower Levelized Cost of Storage “LCOS” Efficiency (<10cents/kWh ) still at its start of its “Theoretical Maximums” to facilitate robust Stretch Targets (<5cents/kWh).
Advanced (but cheap) Latent Heat Phase Change Material as the Storage Medium for the TORC LDES System delivers High Energy Density and the Stable Charging Delivery that Latent Heat allows (unlike Sensible heat or Traditional fire Heat the drops off as the “fissile” material of its fuel dictates. In fact, PMC acts on “Fusion” of Solid to Liquid, allowing low temp and pressure but high energy density. As such, this is the closest he have to “Cold Fusion” Energy Generation. This leads to High Energy Density Phase Change Material (PCM) thermal storage with high cycling (limitless charging and discharging) where the Co-efficient of Performance “CoP” leverages compression-based heat input into the Low Temp Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power generation to deliver reliable, 24/7 clean energy on an initial Round Trip Efficiency of 35% (Theoretical Maximum 90%). This will give the Pilot Plant a commercial performance low cost LCOS (<10cents/kWh) but with ability to stretch to the Holy Grail of Low-Cost Deployable Clean Energy (all in cost of Electricity LCOE of <5cents/kWh.
