SO WHO ARE WE?
TORC is a Start Up at pilot plant stage awarded funding by the Australian Government Clean Energy body ARENA (Australian Renewable Energy Agency). This Development support involved extensive review and third-party expert validation of our technology.
TORC is Developing an Affordable, Deployable Long Duration Clean Energy Storage System with a Novel Latent Heat PCM Storage Medium, Charged and Discharged by Low Temperature (for Ultra Low OPEX) running advanced Avionic Jet Turbo Turbines to Generate On-Demand Clean Power to Firm Variable Renewable Energy
For the last decade, here in Australia, our shareholder has manufactured the componentry of our Storage System (High Temperature Heat Pumps and Organic Rankine Cycle Turbines).
Accordingly, the runway for our Electricity LDES Pilot is very short (12 months) to commercial deployment. For Heat Storage, we are commercial ready now and significantly cheaper than fossil fuel boiler storage.
We also have a R&D partnership with Monash University who have developed our storage medium, which is, as far as we can see, the only low temp (relatively speaking, around 130°C) advance material science phase change material in the World, capable of driving an electrical Generator for electrical power discharge (also can store and discharge heat for Commercial needs in the 80c-200c range on a CoP of over 300%).
The low temp compared to all other conventional thermal batteries (in fact we define ours as a “Thermal Phase Change Battery”) of molten salts, graphite & metals etc, means our cost of materials is very low with only a bulk commodity cost (including our PCM Storage Medium) and our operational costs (OPEX) classed as “Ultra Low”. This produces for us the most competitive LCOS we can see globally.
We can see no other Deployable Affordable Clean Utility Scale Long Duration Storage System that uses our advanced material science or indeed any other system that can match our KPI parameters and stretch LCOS targets (5cents/kwh for electrical storage and 1cent kWh heat).
TORC’s Long Duration Energy Storage System provides “Firming” that offers Solar & Wind Generation (unpredictable Variable Renewable Energy “VRE” that can generate for charging, on average only 5hours a day, subject to the weather) on site, deployable, affordable storage for predictable Duration Discharge (+20hours to days) capability to support On-Demand (24/7) Generation Delivery, as required by the main Emitters, who are the Commercial & Industrial “C&I” Sector, which current VRE cannot support. Presently, aside from Nukes, Geothermal & Hydro, only Fossil Fuel can deliver On-Demand/Dispatchable Electricity.
On-Demand Energy delivery is essential to C&I (hence why this sector is called “Hard to Abate”).
It is accepted now, there will be no Clean Energy Transition with VRE (the is main clean energy generators) without LDES Firming. And without Affordable LDES, all VRE remains unprofitable (no pure play VRE remains on any Stock Exchange).
VRE needs to be “Firmed” so it can deliver power predictably / On-Demand via Affordable & Deployable LDES/Storage.
To Firm, VRE with the most commercial LDES Systems, it is likely to require a deployment ratio of 1:10 being 10MWs of VRE Generation for charging to every 1MW VRE Generation for Base Load Power need. This is a massive Global Transition challenge to cost trillions but cannot really be fathomed by financial cost and far exceeds the transition of the Oil Century.
There is presently no Affordable, Deployable Clean LDES available in the World today (reason Gas prices in EU surged to $300/MWh)
